It is a skin disease that has important implications for health, and that those affected tend to have a preoccupied state variable, sometimes with real anguish and despair, the disease is usually cause especially in children of rejection and ridicule, as significantly altering self-esteem and well being of the sufferer, in addition to any skin changes due to the inability to protect it from solar radiation.

What Is Vitiligo?

Vitiligo is not contagious and deadly disease, is an alteration in the pigmentation of the skin in which melanocytes (cells that produce melanin, which provides the color or our skin’s natural pigment) are destroyed or removed. This disease is the fifth leading cause of consultation in dermatology services, affects two in every 100 people and can occur at any age, yet 50% of cases occur before age 20. Patients present areas with white spots on them, the study is a clear absence of melanocytes. The hair and mucous membranes of the eyes, nose and mouth can also become targets in the affected areas.

Complications

This condition does not affect physical health, but it can affect the emotional health of the sufferer to generate anxiety and low self-esteem. In addition, people with vitiligo are more susceptible to skin cancer by sunlight and that their tolerance to UV radiation is much lower.
